Datacentre at Pantin for a leading international datacentre provider

Situated in Pantin, an area to the north of Paris, this new datacentre has been unveiled. It will eventually house 11,500m² of highly secure data suites with the latest datacentre technology. In 2009, Reid Brewin Architects began working with Sodearif to come up with the concept for the building and in 2011 we were appointed by the client to customise the interior spaces in line with their corporate guidelines.

A new generation datacentre for Paris

This site is set across two council boundaries, Pantin and Bobigny to the north of Paris, between a railway junction at the end of line of industrial warehouse buildings. The fact it straddles two independently run districts make the management and coordination of the project particularily complex as the building has to comply with the planning regulations of both local authorities, which are not exactly the same. Separate building permit applications had to be put together for both districts, in accordance with their respective local urban planning requirements.

Objectives of the project:

The existing building was built as a postal sorting office in 1974 and was in full operation until closing in 1997. The objective of the project is to renovate the building to become a new generation datacentre including :  
  • complete restructuring of the site, façades, external services
  • creating small office areas for use by the datacentre operators
  • creating 10,000m² of server space
The project keeps the overall form of the existing building but adapts the elevations to suit the new requirements of the datacentre. There are two floors of data space and associated technical equipment that require large areas of ventilation. The design of the elevations was developed with these functional requirements in mind using alternating panels of louvres and solid metal panels.
