In architecture, a tower is a high building and can have various uses:
Fortified Tower – a tower that improves the strength and the fortification of the building – often found in historical buildings and castles ( watchtower, seige tower, defence tower)
Tower block – high rise building for living in.
Tower house – typical building from the end of the Middle Ages (often for defensive purposes), especially found in Scotland and Ireland. Tower houses commonly appeared in Italy at the beginning of the Renaissance but were residential and more ostentatious in style.
Self supporting Tower – for example the Eiffel Tower, Tokyo Tower, CN tower in Toronto, Berliner Funkturm the radio tower in Berlin.
Observation Tower – a tower allowing you to see far away.
